IPL 2027 Retention Deadline Set for November 15 Ahead of the Final Mini-Auction
The IPL 2027 player auction will take place on December 16 in Goa. On the same day, India and Sri Lanka will play the second ODI in Bengaluru.
The IPL has informed all franchises that the deadline to submit their retention lists for IPL 2027 is November 15, which falls almost a month before the auction. After that, the league will decide how the pool of registered players is to be divided into batches. This must be settled in the week before the auction, ahead of the final list being sent to the franchises.
Only two trades have been completed in the IPL trade window since IPL 2026 ended. Under the latest rules, the window opens one month after the season finishes and closes a week before the auction. It then reopens with a month remaining before the next season begins.
In June, Lucknow Super Giants sent wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant to Delhi Capitals (DC) in exchange for wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav. Earlier this year, DC traded pacer T Natarajan to Sunrisers Hyderabad and received uncapped leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari in return.
The league has not yet confirmed the dates for IPL 2027. In 2024, it announced the schedules for the next three seasons together, with March 14 to May 30 pencilled in as the playing window. However, in September this year, board secretary Devajit Saikia indicated that the tournament could begin in late March.
The IPL 2027 auction is the last mini-auction of this cycle. A mega auction will follow ahead of the 2028 season, and it will also kick off the next media rights cycle, though the BCCI has yet to release the tender. The league moved into the top tier of global sport in 2022, when its media rights were sold for INR 48,390.5 crore (approximately US$6.2 billion).
